Wednesday/Thursday until right now...

Yesterday was Wednesday.  We spent the morning at the Shecahfim school on day two of our three days of work.  If you haven't checked it out yet, you really should.  Go here:
http://www.shechafim.org.il/

If there is ANYBODY out there who is in education and has an interest in special education, this is exactly the place you want to volunteer at and spend some time making lives of people better.  Highlights of the school include:  Amazing place!  It serves people aged 6-21 who have moderate to severe mental disabilities, and can not go to a regular school.  People of all religions are welcome to attend, and includes Jews, Christians, Druze and everyone else.  Amazing!  The location of the school is in Mevo'ot HaHermon.  Anyways, we coutintued to work on the benches we are building out of old tires, dirt and rocks.  Today on Thursday we wrapped them in chicken wire and cemented them so now people have a central location to sit on a patio, and can look at one of the murals we painted and the sign that says who made it.  What an incredible feeling to have given back something to such a worthwhile cause, and a group of teachers and students who absolutely need more than just our money.

After day two at Shecahfim, we went to the Canada Centre.  I hung out, went for a swim and hung out.  At 5:30 we had an opportunity to go out for dinner.  All I wanted to eat was Shwarma, and am happy to say that I was successful in this endeavour.  Yummm!  I love shwarma, and after eating a Shwarma ve-Lafa (shwarma on lafa, a large pita-type wrap), I ate some fallafel from other people who didnt finish, and a piece of chicken from Hazar, one of our Druze hosts.

After that we went out together to a bar.  It was 9:30 at this time and when we got there there were maybe another 10 people or less.  At 11 the place started to get busy, and also at 11, it opened up for open mike night.  My new fried Haley Davis sang and she is amazing.  Go to her website here http://haleykturner.com/ and download her free song.  Also like her on Facebook.  What a fun time.  I spent too much, drank too much and had too much fun.

This morning we woke up to finish our project, which we did and was great, as described above.  All the support that Shechafim gets comes from Canadian donations of time and money.

After that I was very sleepy.

We had a brief presentation to thank us for our contribution of time and help to such a needy cause.  The mayor of the town will be in Calgary on May 25, so maybe I will see if I can meet up with him again.

After that I was still sleepy.

Then we went to the Naot outlet, but I did not buy anything as they do not fit my flat feet.  Oh well, I don't actually need new sandals anyways.

After I was sleepy and slept on the bus.

We had about 40 minutes to kill, so went to a shook (market) and walked around.  I got some candy, apples and carrots.

Then we came here.  Well, some people went to do another good cause and donated blood in Kefar Yuval.  I would have, but alas gave blood 3 weeks ago in Calgary, so could not.

Now I am drinking a Goldstar beer, feeling much less sleepy, about to go have bbq'd chicken, be in some pictures, drink some more beer, some wine, eat humus, salad, and just enjoy the evening.

Talk to you soon.

Sincerely,

Elliot S. Weinstein
