Eilat to Kiryat Shmona

Eilat is the southernmost city in Israel and Kiryat Shmona is the largest city in the north. 10 km from the Good Fence and the border with Lebanon.  The total trip was 9.5 hours on a bus.

I returned to TA on Sunday afternoon after getting on th bus in the morning. The trip was 5.5 hours (7.5 Israeli hours) and finally arrived back at Sally's. I had some time to kill but was glad to be back. Went for a run on the beach, relaxed and had a beer, watched some tv on the computer, had a shower and relaxed. Sally got back and we relaxed for a bit and then met her friend Becca and wen for shwarma dinner at Kikar Rabin (Rabin Square).

Monday morning I walked to the Shook Ha Carmel. I walked around and finally bought something for myself. It is a Shabbat wine dispenser that divides the wine into 6 wine shot glasses. I imagine that it can be used to divide other liquids just the same into 6 shots as well. Perhaps I will investigate this when I get home...

After walking around the market I came back and not ten minutes later so did Sally. In the afternoon I rented a bicycle to ride around town and the two of us went on a pretty long and good ride. We rode along the beach (it was wiiiindy) to Yaffo and Old Yaffo. We stopped at Abulafia for the best bread in the world (as described by my brother Benjamin) and indeed it was quite delicious. Mine was filled with cheese which I imagine is not what Ben had in mind when he suggested it but nonetheless it was delicious. From there we rode up Rothchild Street (there is one in every city, he was a big supporter of Zionism and Israel), through Tel Aviv, up to the university where Sally is in school, and back down along the beach from the other side to her house. We assume roughly 25 km, which in itself isnt too much, except when you are both rididng ill fitting cruiser bikes. But it was a great ride and I had the bike until 4 the next day.

Tuesday I woke up and rode back to the Tel Aviv University and went to the Museum of the Diaspora which is located on the campus. http://www.bh.org.il/.    As I was walking through I recognized a few things I had seen when I was there 13 years ago with USY. Crazy. After that I met my friend Shuval for lunch and had shwarma for the second time in 12 hours. Yummm! I love Israeli shwarma and can confidently say I have had my fill while I have been here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawarma

After lunch I went and sat on the beach and read for a little while. It was overcast but still warm enough tot go into the water. How could I not.

That night Sally, Sasha and I got some beers and met Sisco at the ping pong tables. Yes, they have ping pong table that anyone can use in a park. A-mazing. After we kicked some people off who were just sitting there we played. After ping pong we went and ate the Best. Fallafel. Ever. Sisco left early so sucks to his asthma.

Wednesday morning I got on the first of a series of buses. I took bus 4 to the New Central Bus Station, then got on 301 to the Weizmann Institute. It was very neat. The home of Chaim Weizmann is there, the first President of Israel, and is one of the most succesful scientifc research institutes in the world. Many vaccines, drugs and other scientific advances have come from there. It was pretty neat. They have a giant solar PV research area that is really cool and was funded by donations from different Canadian families.

Then I got back on 301 to the bus station and then got on the 845 to Kiryat Shmona. Four hours later I arrived! Then I had to hitch hike to Tel Chai University and arrived to surprise all of my friends from the program here! It was great. They are in class until 10 pm so I am here sitting in their class with them, not understanding anything. Perfect time to write in the Blog!  I am currently using Asa's iPhone to construct this blog.  There were a few people who knew i was comming but I decided to surprise the rest. Tonight I will stay wih Asa again and tomorrow night too. On Friday I go back to Tel Aviv, but that is another story.

Finally I would like to thank everyone who is reading this! I am glad that you are enjoying reading about what i am doing.

Until next time.

Sincerely,
Elliot S. Weinstein
